Here’s our step-by-step guide so that you’re extra prepared.

Japan Rail Pass Exchange Process:

When you order a Japan Rail Pass through Japan Experience, as previously stated, we will send you a voucher to your shipping address in your home country or even to your place of accommodation in Japan. This voucher is not the pass itself but will be used to exchange for your pass in Japan. The process is as follows:

  1. Take your voucher(s) to one of the many JR exchange offices. Refer to the extensive list below to find an office. Many of these offices will be located inside JR train stations, but as well as a number of major airports, such as Kansai International Airport, Haneda Airport, and Narita Airport. Note that not all major airports in Japan will have an exchange office.
  2. Present your voucher(s) to the JR exchange office staff along with the passport(s) associated with each. You will be asked to confirm your activation date. Remember, your activation date and exchange date DO NOT have to be the same. If you intend to use your pass from a later day, you are free to do so, as long as it is within 30 days of the exchange date.
  3. Receive your usable JR Pass and, if you wish, you'll be able to make reservations for any upcoming train rides with reserved-seating options. This can also be done at a later time at a JR office or at the machines also available at JR stations.

Plan out ahead of time where and when you’ll exchange your pass using this official list of offices.

NOTE: Regional passes can only be exchanged at certain exchange offices within the region. Please check beforehand.

For those who order train tickets with us at Japan Experience, there is a different exchange process done at machines at train stations.
